Carved Tanzanite Pear

Hand-carved from natural tanzanite, 216.20 carats

A tanzanite of substantial size, cut to a domed pear shape and carved across its entire face in the Mughal manner. A central panel is defined by two incised lines running to the apex, filled with an open six-petal blossom above a rising leaf motif. The flanking fields carry their own smaller rosettes and curling foliage, and the pattern continues around the shoulders and down to the base rather than stopping at a border — the whole surface is worked.

Tanzanite is pleochroic, showing different colours along different crystal axes, and at this depth the effect is pronounced: the stone reads a deep royal blue through the carved centre and lifts to violet at the shoulders where the material is thinner. The finished orientation of a carving like this is decided at the rough stage, before a single line is cut. Carved by hand at our family atelier in Jaipur.

Care
Tanzanite is a relatively soft stone with perfect cleavage, sensitive to knocks and sudden temperature change. Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth only — never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Store separately from harder stones.
